Local news and newspapers

Journalist, blogger and UBC School of Journalism Associate Professor, Alfred Hermida , posts some interesting comments on his website regarding our Online Canadians and News study, a survey that looks into the media consumption habits of Canadians who have access to the internet. What most struck Prof. Hermida were our figures regarding newspapers and local news:

"The main reason for choosing newspapers was out of habit. People were either daily readers or subscribers.

But only 8% said they choose newspapers because they were a source of local news. And even less said it was because they like holding a physical paper.

So while journalists and commentators may argue over the importance of local news, it seems like regular newspaper readers, at least in Canada, don’t really care." More

Newspapers, internet tie for media consumption

The Canadian Community Newspapers Association recently posted an article highlighting some findings from one of the CMRC’s most recent studies, Online Canadians and News . Our figures show that, of Canadians who have access to the internet, 22 per cent of their time is spent consuming news and information by way of each newspapers and the internet. Meanwhile, an average of 24 per cent of their time is spent consuming news and information via the television. A typical online Canadian (18+) spends a total of 2.3 hours in an average day consuming news and information. To see the article, click here .
